The story of the first season follows the adventures of Kazuto "Kirito" Kirigaya and Asuna Yuuki, two players who are trapped in the virtual world of "Sword Art Online" (SAO). They are tasked to clear all 100 Floors and defeat the final boss in order to be freed from the game.

A new virtual reality game known as "Gun Gale Online" (GGO) is promoted via streamed broadcast, featuring top-ranked player named XeXeeD. In a bar, a cloaked man nicknamed "Death Gun" fires a bullet from his pistol through the video screen, causing XeXeeD to suddenly convulse and disconnect. A month later, Kazuto Kirigaya and Asuna Yuuki are at a park on a date, discussing the differences between the real and virtual worlds. Four hours earlier, Kazuto met with Seijirō Kikuoka, a member of the Virtual Division of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, who reveals that Tamotsu Shigemura, real-life persona of XeXeeD, died of acute heart failure a few days after his avatar was shot by Death Guns army. Kikuoka, believing that Death Gun is specifically targeting professional Gun Gale Online players, begs Kazuto to once again take up the role of "Kirito" and investigate the situation. In the present, Kazuto and Asuna talk about how the vertical structure of Aincrad in "Sword Art Online" (SAO) represents the axis of time and the plane of space.

Sword Art Online Season 3 opens with Kirito already inside Underworld. ... Kirito finds himself stuck in Underworld and he's missing memories, cannot log out of the game, and cannot call the admins to get him out. This is where Project Alicization comes in. This season is by far my favorite and since it includes one of my favorite characters Eugeo.

Asuna is a kind and helpful young woman, who is similar to Kirito, can not abandon another person in trouble even at the risk of her own life. She takes the game very seriously and is very focused on clearing it, before Kirito tells her to enjoy SAO some.

Klein wore a red bandana that held up his hair and was tied around his forehead. He had spiky reddish hair. He also had a hooked nose, a slight beard on his cheeks and chin, and, according to Kirito, he looked like a wandering samurai or a bandit.

Sinon is strong and powerful, while Shino seems fragile and vulnerable. Shino was traumatized as a young girl, when she saved her mother from a dangerous criminal by taking his gun and shooting him with it.

Eugeo was a kindhearted and considerate person who thought about the needs of others as well as his own. For example, when he first met Kirito during the latter's second dive, Eugeo noticed that Kirito was hungry, and thus shared his food with him.

Suguha is upbeat and outgoing. She is much more social and converses easily with others. Even when Kazuto began to push her away after finding out they were not really siblings, she still treated him with good spirit and tried to get back in his life. She can be very aggressive towards those that annoy her or cross her and can easily lose her temper
